اصطلاح SIDS به مرگ ناگهانی و غیرمنتظره شیرخواری که هیچ عامل کشنده تشخیصی برای آن یافت نمی شود، اطلاق می گردد. در سال 1387 پانل تشکیل شده توسط انستیتو سلامت ملی آمریکا مرگ ناگهانی شیرخوار را چنین تعریف نموده است. مرگ ناگهانی شیرخوار زیر یکسال که علت آن بعد از بررسی کامل بوسیله کالبد شکافی و مرور بر سابقه بیماری نامشخص باشد.
